Overview
Fast, wildlife-first 3 nights / 4 days group tour focused on Sri Lanka’s best-value safari parks — Udawalawe (elephants) and Yala (excellent leopard & mixed-wildlife sightings). Designed for small groups (6–16 pax) who want two high-quality jeep safaris, comfortable mid-range hotels or eco-lodges, local naturalist-led drives, and easy transfer logistics from Colombo / Negombo.
Trip Itinerary
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo / CMB) or Negombo rail/road hub. Meet your group leader and board an air-conditioned coach for the scenic drive south (approx. 4–5 hours depending on traffic) to the Udawalawe area. Check in to a comfortable mid-range hotel or eco-lodge located near the park. Late afternoon: group briefing with your naturalist guide covering safari safety, photography tips, expected wildlife, and the next day’s logistics. Evening at leisure — early dinner and rest to prepare for an early safari the next morning.
Why Udawalawe first: the park’s open grasslands give excellent daytime elephant sightings and are a gentle introduction to Sri Lankan safaris (ideal for groups and families).
Pre-dawn wake-up for a morning jeep safari (approx. 3–4 hours) inside Udawalawe with an experienced tracker — expect herds of wild Asian elephants, sambar deer, water buffalo, crocodiles and many water-bird species. Return to the lodge for a hot breakfast. Midday visit to the Elephant Transit Home (rehabilitation centre) if group timing allows — observe feeding / release schedules and learn about rescue & release work (entry/visiting hours depend on centre operations). Afternoon: optional village visit or short nature walk; evening free with an optional short night-drive talk / Q&A with the guide.
Tip: Morning safaris are best for active wildlife; your operator will allocate safari time to maximize sightings.
After breakfast, transfer eastwards toward the Tissamaharama / Kataragama / Yala gateway (approx. 1.5–2 hours depending on exact lodging). Lunch and short rest at your Yala-area hotel or campsite. Late afternoon and early evening: board open-roof 4×4 jeeps for a sunset safari in Yala National Park (approx. 3–4 hours). Yala is famed for its leopard population — your guide will focus on waterholes and game trails where predators, sloth bears, deer, elephants and varied birdlife congregate. Return to the lodge for dinner — share sightings and photos with the group over a campfire or dining table.
Note: Yala’s western blocks are the most visited and sightings fluctuate by season; your naturalist will use recent sighting reports to plan the best route.
An early-morning safari in Yala (best light for wildlife photography) for a final chance at leopards, crocodiles and birdlife. Return to the hotel, check out, and begin your transfer back toward Colombo. Depending on your flight/train time you can request a short stop at Galle Fort (UNESCO heritage) for a heritage walk, or head straight to Colombo / Negombo for airport transfer. Drop at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) or the chosen station — tour ends with warm farewells and a digital photo pack shared with the group (where permitted).
Optional add-on: Extension to a coastal turtle hatchery visit (seasonal) or an overnight in Galle for guests extending their holiday.
