Arrive at Bagdogra Airport / New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station where your driver will greet you and begin the scenic 3.5–4 hour drive to Gangtok (approx. 120–130 km depending on route). Check in to your centrally located mid-range hotel in Gangtok, freshen up, and take an easy walk along MG Marg (pedestrian promenade) to get orientated — cafes, handicraft shops, local bakeries and street photography spots. Evening free to join a group dinner at a recommended restaurant (good for solo travellers who want company) or relax with a rooftop tea watching the hills.
Early breakfast and depart for Changu (Tsomgo) Lake — a high-altitude glacial lake set in a peaceful valley (permit/entry formalities handled by the operator). Visit adjacent Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir (Baba Mandir) — short visit and local legends make it an evocative stop. If weather and permits allow, you can optionally request a short yak/pony ride at the lake shore or a local snack at a lakeside stall. Return to Gangtok by late afternoon for a spa (optional) or a walk to the Hanuman Tok viewpoint for sunset over the valley. (Note: Nathula Pass is sometimes offered as an upgrade but requires extra permits and advance booking; we keep it optional for solo travellers.)
After breakfast, head to Rumtek Monastery (one of Sikkim’s most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries) for a guided tour — learn about rituals, butter lamps and monastery life. On the way back, visit Do Drul Chorten stupa and Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (interesting for solo travellers who like history and photography). Afternoon spent exploring local artisan shops — pick up hand-woven woollens, thangka prints or local tea. Evening: join an optional homestyle cooking demo or tea-tasting session to meet locals and fellow travellers.
Free morning to buy last souvenirs (MG Marg or Lal Bazaar), enjoy a leisurely breakfast and short photo stops (Tashi Viewpoint or Ridge). Check out by hotel time and transfer to Bagdogra / NJP for onward travel. If your flight/train is late, request a relaxed drop with a scenic stop en route.
