Best Time to visit Shimla-

The ideal time to go to Shimla is mostly based on what you are seeking, as each season in this hill resort has its own beauty.

March to June- is a time of pleasant weather with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. This is the peak season for tourists, as it is an ideal refuge from the hot summer temperatures of the plains. It's the best season for sightseeing.

The monsoon season during July, August, and September sees heavy showers, making Shimla a greenery-filled paradise with foggy hills and a romantic atmosphere. Scenic beauty is lovely and hotels are less expensive as there are less tourist crowd.

Autumn, October to November, is also a great time to visit Shimla. The weather is clear, the air is cool, and the nearby mountains are resplendent after the rains. With temperatures between 10°C and 20°C, this season provides a peaceful ambience and lesser crowds, ideal for couples, photographers, and people who like peaceful environments.

For snow lovers, December to February is ideal. Winters are chilly in Shimla, with temperatures ranging between -2°C and 10°C, and the town is usually covered in heavy snow in January and February. Winter is perfect for ski-ing at Kufri, ice skating at Shimla, and snug nights by the fireplace.

How To Reach Shimla

By Air

The closest airport is Jubbarhatti Airport (Shimla Airport) at a distance of approximately 22 km from the city. It is a small airport with sparse connectivity, primarily from Delhi and Chandigarh.

By Train

The closest broad-gauge railway station is Kalka, 90 km from shimla. Kalka–Shimla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which takes 5–6 hours to cover the picturesque route through tunnels, bridges, and hills. Alternatively, normal taxis and buses are accessible from Kalka railway station to Shimla (2.5–3 hours by road). Direct trains to Kalka operate from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata, so it's an easy entry point.

By Road

Shimla enjoys good road connectivity with prominent North Indian cities. The distance from Delhi is approximately 343 km (7–9 hours), and from Chandigarh, approximately 113 km (3–4 hours). There are regular Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and Himachal Pradesh Tourism buses (luxury Volvo and deluxe coaches) available from Delhi, Chandigarh, and other small towns. Several tourists also like driving or taking private cabs to experience the scenic Himalayan roads.

Local Transport in Shimla

As most of the central points such as Mall Road and The Ridge are on foot, the tourists have to depend on cabs, buses, or shared cabs to travel around beyond the central hub. Taxi hire or taking local tour buses is the best way for local sightseeing (Kufri, Mashobra, Chail, etc.).

If you want a little comfort – you can choose 3 or 4-star hotels, where you get modern facilities and beautiful mountain views.

If you want a luxury experience – there are resorts in Mashobra, Chhabra and Kufri. Here you get the full enjoyment of relaxation, spa and spectacular mountain views.

Ideal travel duration

3-4 days are the best time to visit Shimla.

Day 1: As soon as you land in the city, take a stroll around Mall Road and The Ridge. The view of the entire city and mountains from Scandal Point is worth seeing. Don't forget to have tea or hot chocolate at a cafe in between.

Day 2: Do some adventure activities. Visit Jakhu Temple and if the weather is good, go horse riding or light trekking in Kufri. Playing in the snow is also fun in winter.

Day 3: Spend time completely in nature. Visit pine forests, waterfalls and lush green valleys. Also, go shopping and enjoy local food by visiting local markets.

Day 4 (if time permits): Take a short trip to Mashobra or Naldehra. The atmosphere here is calm and beautiful, you can relax and enjoy the view throughout the day.
